Description

Evil of Flowers by Mary Jones. Painted in 1993 for the Tom Cugliani solo gallery exhibition in New York City. Mary Jones is a New York based artist. Her paintings and drawing are known for their striking use of color, their complex beauty and their understanding and reflection of our contemporary world. Her inspiration comes from the boldness of NYC street graffiti to Abstract Expressionism in step with the urban phenomena of layered time and experience. Her work has been shown internationally and is included in prominent collections worldwide. Her paintings find fragments of human form at the edge of recognition within an abstract process. Eschewing overt figuration, she makes reference to ancient, imaginary sculpture through a layered and intuitive approach. This fragmentation organizes the paintings as a gestalt, intended to evoke a connection with the earliest signifiers of our human imagination. Born in North Carolina and recieved a BFA and MFA from U of Boulder Colorado. Began painting in Los Angeles and moved to NYC in 1980s. In addition to her painting career, she also teaches at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and Rhode Island School of Design.
